From the time we can remember, we have known the same old sports. While the advanced technology and digital revolution has changed the way we shop, chat and date, not much has changed in the world of sports. Or has it?
While no new sport has been invented in the past one century, there’s a phenomenon on the rise and it’s called the eSports. It is a potpourri of different video games and there are teams that play and compete with each other to win a title. The game has everything that you expect from a traditional sport – nail biting moments, brain wracking, excitement, fury and fan craziness.
The first ever eSports store opened in the East End of London last year and it is known as the Bunkr. The hip store is trending among the youngsters as the world’s first ever eSports concept store. At the Bunkr, fans can buy a plethora of eSports equipment, merchandise, view streamed events, meet players and also watch Live games.
eSports is very much like the traditional sports where fans watch matches, cheer players, and follow their favorite team. It’s like the world has been waiting for a change and youngsters feel awe-struck as they stare at the screens and watch the teams compete.
Sam Mathews had a concept that he wanted to bring to life and he founded Fnatic about 13 years ago to realize his vision. Today they have become one of the most successful teams in the world, competing with over 600 tournaments across the globe. Some of their popular games are League of Legends, Counter-Strike, Call Of Duty, Overwatch and Dota2.
Their League of Legends team won the first ever worldwide championship in 2011. The Counter-Strike team has received a lot of appreciation although there are few British players. According to Mathews, the eSport is the first ever sport after football that has become a worldwide phenomenon.
Despite the enormous popularity of eSports, mental health experts say too much involvement in these games may not be good for the youngsters. While digital gaming generates whopping revenue of $465 million and the global audience may reportedly reach 385 million this year, it’s making the younger generation game-addicted and lazy.
We believe there needs to be an ethics code in the industry. The founder needs to take the ethical responsibility to ensure that youngsters don’t get lost in the virtual world but enjoy it as a part of their recreational activities.
